Building a brighter future for Ethiopia

Can you imagine what life would be like if you had less than $1 a day to live on? This is the struggle faced by 39 million Ethiopians. And now their difficulties are compounded by drought and famine which have affected many regions.

In addition to meeting immediate needs for food and shelter there's important work to be done to ensure a brighter future. And the key work here is in the field of education. Education opens up employment options and offers a route out of poverty.

At the heart of the need for education are books, the essential tools for learners of all ages.

Book Aid International urgently needs money to send books to Ethiopia. Our partner organisations have asked for 50,000 books this year, for schools, libraries, universities and hospitals.

We distribute these books through membership organisations that have come into being thanks to a strong self-help ethic among the Ethiopian population. Members contribute a monthly fee varying from seven pence to 30 pounds. And their involvement doesn't stop there as they also take an active role in establishing and running community projects. These vary from improving education and schooling to health care and sanitation projects.

Reaching the readers:

People in the UK book trade know what a difference a book can make. You can pay for one to reach a reader in Ethiopia by donating just £1.30. This small sum of money covers our costs for managing the programme - including monitoring and evaluation, as well as sorting, selection and shipping of the books.
