Reading Tents

This World Book Day, Book Aid International would like to highlight some of the inspiring work by our partners in Africa to encourage reading.  In many schools, there are no libraries and children have absolutely no access to story books to improve their skills.  Many of our partners run reading promotion programmes that involve setting up children's reading tents.

Reading Tents

Reading is a really important skill which people use all the time. It is so natural for us that we may not notice how often we are reading things in everyday life. In just one day you might read the label on a cereal packet, a bus timetable, a chapter in a novel and information on the blackboard as well as lots of other things.

We read so often that we may take this skill for granted!  But if you couldn't afford books or didn't know where to get hold of them you might never learn to read very well and you would also quickly forget how to read.

This is where the travelling reading tents project aims to help. Children in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda can't afford books of their own and there are very few books in school as well. The travelling reading tent brings books for the school library and also helps to encourage children to understand that books aren't boring and that there are different stories that we can all enjoy.

The reading tent is a fun environment for children to read in. Storytelling and competitions help to bring books to life and encourage children to enjoy reading as a fun leisure activity. The tents aim to build a 'reading culture': the idea is that children have fun with books and this encourages them to carry on reading throughout their lives.

The project is aimed at encouraging a love for reading among children by adopting leisurely approaches, such as: storytelling, music and dance, and reading and writing competitions.  Books provided by BAI enable these activities to take place and continue to encourage new readers.
