Remember it only costs us £1.25 to get a book into the hands of a reader overseas - so every penny counts!
Hold a fancy dress or mufti day! Pupils and teachers could dress up as their favourite book character. Collect a donation from everyone who joins in - you could also award a prize for the best costume, or get pupils to tell the class all about their character, and why they have chosen them.
Get extreme! Books take us on advertures all of the time - now it's your turn to take them! Why not hold an Extreme Reading competition? Get everyone to bring in pictures of themselves reading in unusual, funny or unexpected places - and get the teachers to join in too! You could give prizes for the funniest or most original picture.
Have a class book sale or book swap! Everyone participating hands in a book, and makes a donation to take another from the class pile. Or why not try a 'lucky dip', with numbered tokens pulled from a hat - each one matching a number on a particular book?
Create a reading tent! Is there a space in the classroom or school that can be transformed by setting up a reading tent? Reading tents are designated areas where children can go and enjoy an informal environment to lounge around and embrace their favourite book, as well as play games and enjoy traitional storytelling. Your tent could be decorated by the pupils, and donate £1.50 for admission!
Enter our competition! We will be holding a contest to design a poster in 2008 - so get ready! The entry details will be on our World Book Day poster.
Bingo! Download our Human Bingo sheets and learn more about the lives of the children in your class. Print them out as they are, or personalise them for your school. Get the children to interview each other to fill each square with a different name - the first one to get all of the squares filled in wins!
Read all about it! If you're looking for more ideas to celebrate World Book Day, why not check out these beautiful books from Frances Lincoln, which introduce you to special days in the lives of people across Africa, as well as games, songs and customs! Alternatively, these books will introduce you to writers and stories from Africa.
