Boost for academic books

The Law Society Charity has supported our law book programme for a number of years and, in 2009, their funding will help us to send nearly 2,000 brand-new, high quality law books to our partners. In sub-Saharan Africa, law textbooks are expensive and scarce, but essential if the region is to develop legal processes to protect citizens, ensure equality and guarantee procedural fairness. There is great demand for information on land laws, social security and labour protection, and for material on human-rights-based approaches to development. The books that we send go some way towards meeting this demand:

“We had yawning gaps in our law, research methods and social science collections which we managed to fill with Book Aid International donations because we are finding it difficult to source books locally. Our students have benefited from Book Aid International, which helped them with resources that led to their getting degrees. These new degree holders have gone ahead to work in different capacities thereby contributing to national development.”

University physics texts

The Institute of Physics is also supporting our provision of university level textbooks by donating £500 to fund the purchase of copies of University Physics: International Edition, published by Pearson. Pearson have helped to make the Institute of Physics donation go even further by offering us an excellent discount on the RRP of this text.

Academic books are sorely needed by many of our partner organisations and generous donations such as these are vital in ensuring academic texts reach the students and professionals who need them most.
