International Literacy Day

The Education for All Global Monitoring Report: Literacy for life

International Literacy Day
8th September 2006 is International Literacy Day. It's an important chance to remember the one billion adults worldwide who remain unable to read a book or sign their names. Many millions more have limited access to reading materials that could help them to maintain and strengthen their literacy skills.

To mark the occasion Book Aid International's Director Sara Harrity gave a presentation at Portcullis House in Westminster on the subject of 'Creating literate environments: the role of libraries'. The Council for Education in the Commonwealth hosted the meeting, which was chaired by Sally Keeble MP. View the presentation.

This year the Education for All Global Monitoring Report produced a detailed analysis of literacy issues worldwide. Find out more: http://www.efareport.unesco.org/
