Kenya Camel Library

A new photo journal with pictures of the Kenyan Camel Mobile Library can be found on the BBC website.

The camel mobile library serves the nomadic population of Kenya's North Eastern province, Garrissa. There are high levels of poverty and illiteracy in this region and most people are unable to visit a static library. But the camel library is helping to foster the reading habit and strengthen literacy skills by giving people the chance to read and borrow books on a fortnightly basis.

The camel mobile library service comes to the settlements - each camel bearing two boxes of books - and a tent is erected where young and old alike can read the books available. Book Aid International supplies much needed books for the library.
