Namibian visitors

Readers at Eenhana Library in Namibia.

During January 2007 Book Aid International and the Namibian High Commission in London jointly hosted three Namibian visitors on a week-long programme of meetings with politicians, policy makers and library managers.

The three visitors were Hon Kaiyamo, an MP, Stanley Simataa, and Marianne Gei-Khoibes. Each of them is a member of a prestigious council that undertakes policy and lobbying work on behalf of libraries in Namibia. Their brief was to find out about new directions in library management and to learn about the challenges and rewards of different policies and ways of working.

Our visitors were particularly keen to learn about work to promote reading more widely, to engage and involve a broad cross-section of communities in using library services and to learn about the Peoples Network, which has ensured that throughout the UK people can access the Internet for free in their local library.
