Children's Poetry Competition

Book Aid International has teamed up with top children’s publisher Walker Books and Britain's leading discount book store The Works Retail to launch the National Children’s Poetry Competition 2009.

June Morley's book, available at The Works

The competition follows the success of a previous partnership between Book Aid International, Walker Books and The Works Retail in 2007 which aimed to raise awareness of reading. The 2007 competition was won by June Morley, mum-of-three from Hassocks, Brighton, who scooped first prize with her delightful story Little Mole and the Fading Sun. June’s winning title has been published by Walker Books for Midpoint Press and is on sale now exclusively at The Works stores and on their website.

This year’s competition is open to children aged between 5 and 16 years old. To enter, they have to write a poem of up to 100 words themed on a region in the UK.

The winning entries will be published in a children's poetry book specifically commissioned for this competition. The best entry from each region will also receive an amazing prize of a bundle of books from Walker Books.  Once published, the book will be available from The Works stores throughout the United Kingdom and online.

Poems will be judged by a panel at Walker Books - which will include a well known children's author - who will be looking for original, creative and imaginative poems. The closing date for entries is 30 November 2009 and winners will be announced in late February 2010. All competition rules can be found at The Works Retail's website.
