If you are a librarian or run a reading group or book club, why not organise an event to share your love of books and raise money so people in Africa can enjoy books too!
Why not dedicate the whole day to celebrating reading – invite children to dress up as their favourite book character, hold a bake for books day or organise a book reading….perhaps with a local celebrity or author!

In sub-Saharan Africa more than half the population earns less than a dollar a day – which means books are a luxury very few can afford. Even those who go to school can fall back into illiteracy when they leave, because they don’t have access to reading materials.
This is why libraries are so important. They help people to gain access to the books and information they need and are the heart of the community – places to meet and share ideas.
In the UK, local libraries are a fantastic source of books and information and can provide you with a great opportunity to meet like-minded people. Why not join together to fundraise for Book Aid International? You can combine this with World Book Day and World Book Night in March, Independent Booksellers Week in June or International Literacy Day in September….or you can organise an event at any time of year!
In 2011, we enthusiastically took part in the very first World Book Night, with our friends at Southwark Libraries in London. Take a look at the video for inspiration!
