Children’s book corners

Welcome to Mbeya Regional Library!

Mbeya sits in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania and is the capital city of the surrounding rural Mbeya region. The city itself, home to over 237,000 people, sits just 100km from neighbouring Malawi and Zambia.

In 2010, Mbeya Regional Library joined the Children’s book corner project. With a separate building already set aside to host the children’s corner, the librarians were in desperate need of new, relevant books in both English and Swahili and funds to create a comfortable, welcoming space for children to use.

The arrival of books, toys, and reading mats has seen the number of young library users soar. Following training, librarians have also established a whole programme of activities on Saturdays, when anywhere from 60 to 100 children now visit the library for drawing, painting, story telling, singing, poetry, crafts and library education sessions.

“Before the project, the number of children was very small because there was nothing to motivate them to come to the library… There are now children who are coming even from Wiole, which is very far from the library…” – Peter Kadunda
