“You are intellectually dead if you do not have access to books- just like the body needs food to live; we need books to nourish our intellect.”- Jeanne Veronique, Director, Petit Dan and Sarah Foundation
Atsam Jeanne Veronique is in her early twenties with a degree in political science. As a child at the age of four she moved into the Petit Dan and Sarah foundation so that she could go to school with children at the orphanage because her parents could not afford to support her through primary school. The orphanage became her new home. Jeanne Veronique continued to stay in the orphanage through primary, secondary and high school. On completing her university education in 2005, Jeanne Veronique was appointed Director of Petit Dan and Sarah Foundation. The Petit Dan and Sarah Foundation receives books regularly from Book Aid International which the children of the orphanage and other children from the neighbourhood use.
Asked how she felt about Book Aid books donated to the Foundation over the time she was a child there and now as Director, she had this to say:
“On the whole, books are the key to success in school and subsequently in life. One who uses books is deeply rooted and cannot be easily pulled down by storms of life. I teach this ideology to the children here in the foundation and they take this seriously by putting the library books at the centre of their academic life, making reading an enjoyable activity at the centre of all other things they do. They gain pleasure in reading and sharing the stories they have read with others… You are intellectually dead if you do not have access to books- just like the body needs food to live; we need books to nourish our intellect.”
