Zambia

In 2011 we sent 24,000 books to Zambia.  Since 2007 we have been working with the Forum for African Women Educationalists in Zambia (FAWEZA), which is part of a network of pan-African NGOs with chapters in 35 African countries, supporting development of their mobile library services.

Country Statistics

Human development index ranking:  164th out of 187 countries
%of the population living on less than US$1.25 per day: 28.7%
Adult literacy: 70.9%
Net enrolment in primary education: 91%; secondary education: 28%

Why we work in Zambia

Whilst the enrolment rate in primary education has increased rapidly in recent years there is a lack of books in schools.  Getting a good education is hard in Zambia, a country deeply affected by HIV/AIDSand with a difficult economic situation. We want to help schools, universities and libraries to create the best opportunities, to promote reading, and provide information to transform lives.
