We were very saddened to hear that Tim Rix, CBE, who was the Chair of Book Aid International from 1994 to 2007, passed away last week (8/11/12). Tim had a very distinguished career in publishing, which saw him become MD and Chair of Longman Publishing. He had also served as President of the Publishers Association.
Tim led us through some difficult times – supporting then Director Sara Harrity MBE through a period of financial difficulty when the Department for International Development ended its perennial grant to the charity, and then through a new phase of developing our financial support from individuals. He brought a strong business mind to his leadership, along with a genuine concern for the people involved with the charity – the people reading the books we sent to Africa, and Trustees, staff and volunteers alike. He was also known for his great generosity and sociability: Tim always knew the first names of every staff member and visited the offices and warehouse frequently. Also, unbeknown to most of the staff, Tim paid for the staff Christmas party for many years.
Current Book Aid International Chair, Philip Walters, MBE, said “Tim was a huge support to BAI as Chair of the charity for such a long time and during such a period of change. His great wisdom and kindness will be missed by everyone here.”
