Your gifts in action in Rwanda

| 27th November 2017 | Blog

Earlier this year we sent our first shipment of 30,000 books to Rwanda. These books are now filling the shelves of libraries and community centres across the country, many of which are run by local communities and have only small, out-of-date collections.

The Espérance Community Centre (also known as ‘Football for Hope’) is based in the capital city of Kigali. Small, often self-built homes crowd the hillsides around it and children often struggle to make the most of their education and move forward in life. Espérance is making a difference for hundreds of local children. The organisation brings together many activities, including football and drama, but the small library here is at the centre of the organisation.

Pacifique from the Kigali Public Library works with Espérance to promote reading to local children and help them discover the joy of reading:

We have to develop a culture of reading. If we start from the children, the culture will grow little by little. The plan that I see in the future is that they are going to become the problem solvers of this nation after reading books because when you are reading a book – it’s where you get good information to become who you want to be.

Norbert is one of the Librarians at Espérance:

English books are needed because now we’re working in an international world – we’re doing business with international institutions. So it’s important to encourage young people to learn English.

Kezia is one of the local youth who enjoys using Espérance’s library:

I like to read about magic – ‘Once upon a time.’ I’d like to be an author – I’ll write about life and magic.

Thanks to our generous donors, we sent 30,000 books to Rwanda in 2017. In 2018, we hope to send even more books to people who would otherwise have few books, or even no books at all.

Every £2 you give could send another book to a library like the one at Espérance Community Centre.
