Book Aid International receives £450,000 from players of People’s Postcode Lottery

| 5th February 2018 | News

Book Aid International is delighted to have attended the 2018 People’s Postcode Lottery annual Charity Gala on Wednesday 24 January where it was announced that £93.4 million was awarded to charities and good causes in 2017 – thanks to players of People’s Postcode Lottery. Book Aid International received £450,000 in 2017, helping the charity to send books around the world to some of the world’s most vulnerable and isolated people. The charity is very pleased to announce that players will continue to support its work in 2018 with another award of £450,000.

The gala was a celebration of the phenomenal achievements of charities working across Great Britain and internationally that are supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery. The lottery also took the opportunity to announce an increase to 32% of each ticket sale going directly to good causes. The news of the funding total and increase was shared at the annual event, on Tuesday 23rd January, at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. The event was attended by actor Emma Thompson, broadcaster Dermot Murnaghan and TV presenter Fiona Philips. Entertainment on the night was provided by Heather Small.

Book Aid International’s Chief Executive Alison Tweed, spoke of what the funding means to the charity and of her experiences at the gala: “The funds provided by players are critical to our work and to the work of many charities like ours and it was wonderful to be able to attend the gala last night and celebrate all that players of People’s Postcode Lottery make possible. The books we provide through players’ support will enrich and change the lives of people from all walks of life – from children in rural Ethiopia who will have books to support their learning to medical students who have the new texts they need, to refugees who can escape reality into a great story for a few hours. I would like to thank the players for their inspiring support of readers around the world.”

In 2018 funds provided by players of People’s Postcode Lottery will help Book Aid International increase the number of books it provides around the world, reach more refugees than ever before, create school libraries in Uganda through its Inspiring Readers programme and open five Book Havens where children’s reading can flourish in rural Ethiopia.

The charity is particularly pleased to be reaching out to under-served children in Ethiopia through its Book Havens programme. The programme creates child-friendly spaces in informal, community-run libraries that are providing vital access to information in vulnerable communities where schools are poorly resourced, public libraries are nonexistent and almost no one can afford to buy books. Many children in these communities may never even have held a new book before.

Each participating library will receive training specifically designed for informal librarians, support to establish outreach services for the wider community, funds to refurbish spaces, a grant to purchase local books and a collection of brand new children’s books. Together, these elements will dramatically increase the books and support available for some of Ethiopia’s most vulnerable children.

The charity will partner with local NGO CODE Ethiopia to create five Book Havens. CODE Ethiopia’s Executive Director, Yalwe Zeleke, commented on the difference the programme will make, saying: “Book Havens will allow us to upskill the our librarians, most of whom are currently unskilled informal librarians, refresh the library spaces with a focus on attracting children and encourage parents to support children in visiting the library. In short, it will transform our community libraries into vibrant spaces.”

Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have supported Book Aid International since 2014 and have so far provided a total of £1.35 million to support Book Aid International. To find out more about Book Aid International visit www.bookaid.org.
